Create your neighborhood by your current location or define it by an address. Send alerts if you see suspicious activity or just monitor the activities from the continual feed. You also have the ability to post neighborhood happenings such as yard sales, get togethers or clean ups into the news feed.
This idea started with a summer of unusual criminal activity in my neighborhood. We had 17 break-ins in 23 days. We had neighborhood association meetings in which the police were involved. The activity subsided, but did not stop. I was getting information on the crimes by email, but always after the fact from the neighborhood association. This did not help with communication between neighbors or create any immediate awareness; there was no crime prevention. We decided to solve this pressing problem by developing a real-time communication tool for neighbors, by neighbors.
